SUMMARY:
Travelers Underwriting Trainee Program prepares participants for a career in underwriting. Through a structured training program, the underwriting trainee learns about our underwriting philosophy, business unit products and strategies, principles of negotiation, and relationship building.
As knowledge base increases, participants are gradually given more responsibility within a line of business and eventually an apprenticeship territory. Underwriting Trainees begin by handling renewal business under the supervision of an underwriter and move to developing new business as their skills develop.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
Observe and work with underwriters, risk control representatives, and claim representatives to become familiar with the functions of these positions and how they interact and work with one another
Develop critical underwriting skills, through classroom, independent, and on-the-job training, including analysis of exposures, determination of appropriate insurance coverage and conditions, and the assignment of premium amounts
Gather and review information on financial conditions, risk exposures, loss history, and economic trends that may affect the type of insurance coverage provided
Establish, support, and maintain effective relationships with customers, agents and brokers
EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY:
The ideal candidate for the development program will desire a position that is both analytical and marketing-oriented. A bachelor¿s degree is required for this position. Preferred majors include Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or equivalent work experience. Students with prior related intern experience and 3.0 GPA are also preferred.
