Overall Summary:

Responsible and accountable for implementation and management of strategic underwriting decisions and all related processes for CL lines of business (i.e., Workers Compensation, General Liability, Excess,  Engineering Products/Services or Auto) within an assigned region. Incumbent is responsible for review and development of sound underwriting standards and the management of the Commercial Accounts underwriting process.  In this capacity, ensures that underwriting results for their region enhance overall profitability, growth and retention of Commercial Lines business and are consistent with all related underwriting initiatives.

Reports to the Middle Market Regional Vice President

Primary Job Duties:
Implement and participate in the development of long and short term underwriting strategies to effectively position Commercial Accounts to market the right products, programs and/or services to the right market segment through responsible underwriting decisions.

Establish underwriting policies and standards which support the development of products, services and/or new programs (i.e., research and identify target business, competitor information, analyze industry and economic factors, etc.).

Participates in the strategic business planning activities for Commercial Accounts that are designed to increase the presence in the market of mid-size products and programs; retain the appropriate mix of business; and achieve overall growth and profit goals.

In partnership with marketing closes the deal, providing direction, as necessary, to field underwriters regarding production underwriting techniques and assists with producer calls and all program marketing efforts.

Participate as an advisor in responsible product development, marketing communication and training efforts to ensure they are consistent with profit, growth and retention strategies related to new products and services and/or programs.

Develop and ensure effective utilization of detailed monitoring standards to assess underwriting results (i.e. ¿after the sale¿ reviews) on production and loss results down to the account level (i.e., line profitability analysis, quarterly loss trends, utilization/productivity, etc.) to correct field plan variances.

Analyze market needs and trends as they impact field office marketing initiatives and provide competitor information to product and program management staff.

Perform all related staff management functions as necessary and in response to Commercial Lines expense management objectives.  Effectively mentor and coach marketing/underwriting staff to ensure production, underwriting standards and profitability objectives are achieves.

Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (i.e., LP&E, Claim, Operations, etc.) to facilitate of underwriting and marketing decisions.

Perform all staff management functions to support profit, growth and expense management goals.
